Fiji Rugby Union Chairman John Sanday has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at rebranding the Skipper Select, marking a significant new chapter for rugby development in Fiji. The Skipper Select team, which comprises the finest talents from each province competing in the Skipper Cup, is poised to bridge the gap between provincial rugby, professional club competitions, and national representation.
Acknowledging the competitive nature of the sport, Sanday emphasized that not all players will make it to the pinnacle of rugby, such as joining the Drua or the Flying Fijians. Despite this reality, he reiterated the union’s commitment to creating pathways for players to secure professional contracts overseas. “It’s our duty to ensure that we provide the platform for our boys and girls to come through and have an opportunity to go out into the world and find their fortune or their future,” remarked Sanday.
With a personal history as a national team representative, Sanday is deeply invested in nurturing and advancing the aspirations of young rugby players, aiding them in achieving their goals on the field. This initiative transcends mere team formation; it aspires to establish a sustainable future for rugby talent in Fiji, instilling hope and ambition in the upcoming generation of athletes. The Fiji Rugby Union’s dedication to this cause not only promises to elevate the rugby landscape within the nation but also aims to enhance Fiji’s reputation on the international stage. This initiative is seen as a beacon of hope for young athletes and a transformative step forward for the sport in Fiji.
