The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is making significant strides to enhance its national and high-performance programs by advertising seven key coaching positions ahead of major international competitions. This initiative highlights FRU’s commitment to strengthening its rugby programs across various age groups and formats, particularly in sevens and women’s rugby, as part of a long-term strategy to deepen talent, boost performance pathways, and ensure Fiji’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Among the openings is the vital role of head coach for the Fiji U20 team, who will guide the squad as it enters a new era in international rugby. Starting in 2026, Fiji will participate in the SANZAAR U20 Championship alongside powerhouse nations such as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina, in addition to returning to the expanded World Rugby Junior U20 Championship.
To support the development of the U20 players, FRU is also looking for specialized coaches for forwards and backs. These roles are crucial for instilling technical, tactical, and performance standards in young athletes as they transition into professional rugby.
In the realm of sevens, FRU has announced the need for an assistant coach for the men’s 7s team. This position aims to support the team in their pursuit of Olympic gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, enhancing Fiji’s already impressive legacy in the sport. Similarly, the search for an assistant coach for the Fijiana 7s team reflects the union’s goal of achieving an Olympic medal in the upcoming games.
Additionally, the FRU is seeking a head coach for the Fijiana XV and Fijian Drua Women’s teams. This role is pivotal as it directs the national squad through a transformational phase, with ambitions of securing a historic top-eight finish at the 2029 Rugby World Cup in Australia and establishing Fiji as a regular Tier 1 contender in women’s rugby.
Completing the recruitment drive is the position of head of women’s high-performance program, which serves as a senior leadership role tasked with harmonizing coaching, talent development, and high-performance systems to ensure sustained international success for Fiji.
This proactive approach by FRU not only aims to enhance the nation’s rugby capabilities but also illustrates a vibrant future for Pacific Island rugby on the world stage. Fiji’s commitment to developing its rugby talent across various levels promises exciting prospects in international competitions ahead.
