Three-Day Rugby Bootcamp Boosts Fiji's Rural Talent in Labasa

Fiji Rugby Training Initiative Targets Vanua Levu’s Rural Talent

A significant rugby training program is planned for Labasa from December 2-4, organized by the Drua Foundation and the Reddy Foundation, with the aim of enhancing rugby skills in Fiji’s rural areas. By introducing this program in Vanua Levu, young players, coaches, and officials can learn from experienced trainers and gain professional rugby insights.

Mark Evans, CEO of Fijian Drua, highlighted the club’s enthusiasm in working with the Reddy Foundation on this project, noting the increased number of similar programs designed to extend their community reach and impact. The training sessions will also cover safeguarding and financial literacy, led by ANZ.

Participants will receive training through three World Rugby Level One courses, focusing on first aid, introductory coaching, and strength and conditioning for children. Upon completing the program, they will be equipped to apply these skills locally, aiding in the development of rugby within their communities.

The initiative is supported by Damodar Event Cinemas, showcasing a collaborative effort towards community growth through sports. Rohit Reddy, the managing director of the Reddy Foundation, emphasized the positive outcomes of such partnerships, which unite communities through sports, education, and resilience building.

This program is a part of the broader initiatives of the Drua Foundation to foster rugby talent and engage communities across Fiji. Previous collaborations, including efforts with the New Zealand Government, have enhanced rugby development in areas like Naitasiri, with a focus on women’s participation in sports, leading to community tournaments.

The expanding scope of these programs showcases the Drua Foundation’s unwavering dedication to using rugby as a catalyst for positive change, promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting the youth of Fiji. These initiatives aim to cultivate not only athletic skills but also community spirit and resilience, offering a hopeful future for Fijian youth through the power of sports.
