The Fiji Rugby Union has taken a significant step in expanding its horizons in the international rugby landscape by signing a memorandum of understanding with the China Rugby Association. This agreement aims to create development pathways for young Fijian talent, allowing them to pursue formal education at prestigious Chinese universities while simultaneously honing their rugby skills.
One of the first achievements stemming from this partnership is the selection of six promising players from Deans rugby to receive three-year scholarships in China. The chosen athletes include Iowane Nabe, Alowesi Nakarawa, Soko Nawaqatabu, Eroni Seru, Josevata Veibete, Lemeki Ravukivuki, and Vilimoni Taqiri.
FRU board chairman John Sanday expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement, stating, “In that agreement we have these development pathways that have come through, and this is the first outcome of that agreement. It has taken a bit of work to get it all signed up, but now it is in operation, and we are starting to drive results.” He highlighted the importance of this initiative not only for rugby but also for promoting Fijian culture in China, giving the players an opportunity to represent their homeland.
The six athletes departed for China on Saturday and will align with the Beijing-based Hua Gang Rugby Club, where they will participate in various competitions, including the Beijing Cup. This initiative not only opens doors for these young sportsmen but also signifies a growing partnership between Fiji and China in the realm of sports development. With more opportunities on the horizon, the future looks bright for Fijian rugby talents as they engage with a broader global community.
