FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is emphasizing the importance of nurturing young front-row talent to bolster the national team’s future depth. He called on Fiji Rugby to implement a structured program aimed at identifying and developing young props within the country to ensure that the vital positions are filled with adequately trained players.
Byrne highlighted the current promising developments in the rugby system but urged for a more targeted approach, particularly at the grassroots level. He pointed to the promising young props in teams like the Warriors, but noted that they would not yet be ready for high-level competitions such as Super Rugby. He expressed the need for strategic work in this area, creating pathways for young players to train and excel.
In addition to advocating for increased mobility and fitness as key attributes, Byrne stressed the potential financial benefits for young athletes committed to honing their craft as props. He remarked, “If you’re a young prop in Fiji and you want to use rugby as a vehicle to earn good money and set your family up, get fit, work hard, and the rewards will be there.” His encouragement was clear – with dedication, Fijian players have the potential to secure high-value positions in leagues abroad.
Byrne believes that while coaching the technical aspects of scrummaging is achievable, it requires a strong physical foundation. “We can teach young players the technique as long as they’re strong and fit,” he stated. He has proposed the establishment of national development workshops aimed at fostering talent from a young age, emphasizing the abundance of promising players available in Fiji.
Byrne envisions a future where Fiji can field a robust selection of first-class props, enhancing the team’s performance and depth. “It would be great for the Drua to unearth three or four really good props…we could have ten first-class props, and that would significantly elevate our competitive edge,” he remarked.
