The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is making significant strides to enhance its global presence and strengthen international partnerships through a series of strategic efforts in the United Kingdom this week. Led by Chairman John Sanday and Acting CEO Koli Sewabu, the visit coincides with the Flying Fijians’ participation in the 2025 Quilter Nations Series, underscoring the FRU’s commitment to increasing Fiji’s rugby influence while fostering commercial opportunities.
While in London, the FRU delegation engaged with UK-based partner 8th Man, aiming to strengthen their connections with the Fijian diaspora and delve into new business prospects. They took part in the Fiji/UK Trade Show, an event promoting sports diplomacy that reaffirms trade and cultural ties between Fiji and the UK.
In addition to their networking initiatives, the FRU team toured several high-performance training facilities to explore potential collaborations for future Flying Fijians campaigns. Dialogues with Rugby Football Union President Deborah Griffin and CEO Bill Sweeney focused on player development and tournament planning, highlighting a collective vision for growth.
Chairman Sanday reflected positively on the trip, describing it as a productive venture that created new avenues for collaboration and innovation. Sewabu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the FRU’s commitment to establishing a sustainable future for Fijian rugby. The conversations held during the visit not only projected the potential for future projects but also aligned Fiji Rugby’s efforts with the country’s broader diplomatic and development aspirations, highlighted by their meeting with Fiji’s High Commissioner to the UK.
On the field, the Flying Fijians faced a challenging start in their first Quilter Nations Series match against England, suffering a 38–18 defeat. They are set to compete against France on Saturday in Bordeaux, followed by a match against Spain the following Saturday in Málaga.
