The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is prioritizing the advancement of women’s rugby as part of its new strategic plan for the upcoming years. At the recent FRU General Assembly held in Nadi, Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu announced that a dedicated ‘Women in Rugby Strategy’ will be formulated in the coming weeks, and this will be integrated into the overall strategic framework of the organization.

During the assembly, member unions assessed their progress for the 2025 season while planning for 2026 and the future. Sewabu outlined several key focus areas such as participation pathways, training and education, governance, and administration, with a notable emphasis on the development of women’s rugby.

Evaluating the successes and challenges faced in 2025, particularly regarding the domestic fund, Sewabu acknowledged the significance of this meeting in determining the future direction of Fiji Rugby. A proposed calendar of activities for 2026, which aligns with high-performance programs, has been developed, reflecting confidence in FIJI’s plans moving forward.

The assembly was also a critical consultative stage, allowing member unions to provide input on the new strategic plan. Discussions centered on governance issues within provincial unions, competition structures, and domestic rugby management.

Sewabu expressed appreciation to the member unions for their continuous support, highlighting the FRU’s dedication to reinforcing its foundation and the encouraging growth of women’s rugby. This initiative not only signifies a commitment to inclusivity but also sets a positive trajectory for the future of rugby in Fiji, promising to uplift the sport and provide more opportunities for female athletes.
