Lasarusa Senibale, the esteemed head coach of the Naitasiri under-20 rugby team and assistant head coach of the Fiji U18 team, was commemorated as he was laid to rest yesterday. His funeral service took place at Centenary Methodist Church before he was interred at the new Lovonilase Cemetery, situated outside Suva.
Senibale tragically passed away on October 3, while touring Australia with the Fiji under-18 schoolboys team; he had been preparing for their second Test match against the Australian Schoolboys. At the time of his passing, he was 52 years old.
During the eulogy delivered by Sale Sorovaki, the operations manager of the Fiji Rugby Union, Senibale was remembered as a straightforward individual who epitomized fatherly love. Sorovaki also recounted Senibale’s remarkable achievements in rugby, particularly noting that he was the first Fijian to secure a level three coaching accreditation from World Rugby, highlighting his significant contribution to the sport’s development in Fiji.
The service featured multiple eulogies from various communities, including representatives from the vanua, the Ministry of Education, the Fijian Teachers Association, his family, and the church community. A poignant performance of “Now Is The Hour (To Say Goodbye)” by the Suva Head of Schools Association was a touching tribute to Senibale’s legacy. As his coffin was carried out, mourners joined in singing the hymn “Kaya Oti Na Noda Kalou,” emphasizing the communal sorrow felt at his passing.
Attending the funeral were notable figures, including Cabinet ministers Aseri Radrodro and Jese Saukuru, students from Suva Methodist Primary School, where Senibale had served as head teacher, and members of the national under-18 team he had recently coached.
Senibale is survived by his wife Liviana Bula, their children Barbara, Kasaya, Lasarusa Dokai Jr., and Lasarusa Juju, along with his grandchild Josie Senibale Radaveta. His dedication to the sport and commitment to nurturing young talent in Fiji will long be remembered, leaving a lasting impact on the community and the rugby fraternity.
In light of recent losses within the Fijian rugby community, including the passing of other beloved figures, it is poignant to reflect on the connections formed through the sport and the legacy those like Senibale leave behind. The outpouring of support and affection from the community highlights the enduring spirit of unity within Fijian rugby even in times of grief.
