The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has announced the release of bonuses for members of the Fijiana XV squad who participated in the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. The bonuses, originally withheld due to internal issues, have now been addressed following a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the matter.

FRU chief executive Koli Sewabu revealed that players were promised a bonus of $1,000 for each match they won, including their impressive 28-25 victory against Wales in their final pool game. However, incidents that occurred during their stay in England, including breaches of the team’s no alcohol policy by some players, necessitated a reassessment of the situation, leading to the initial decision to withhold the bonuses.

Sewabu stated that the FRU wanted to clarify details with their hotel related to the breaches and other disturbances, which included unauthorized guests entering their accommodation. He did not disclose specific details but emphasized that understanding all aspects of the incidents was crucial to ensure fairness and accountability before distributing the bonuses.

In concluding the investigation, the FRU demonstrated a commitment to transparency and the welfare of their players by ultimately releasing the withheld bonuses. This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of team policies, especially during significant competitions, while also showcasing the FRU’s dedication to resolving matters thoughtfully and fairly. The resolution of this issue not only reflects positively on the organization but also reinforces the supportive environment for athletes as they navigate the pressures of international sport.
