Fiji Route Scheduling Clash on Nabouwalu–Natovi Sparks Maritime Reforms

The Ministry of Transport has issued a firm reminder to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) to effectively manage and coordinate vessel movements along the Nabouwalu–Natovi route to avoid operational disruptions. This reminder comes in response to recent tensions between shipping companies, triggered when one vessel was forced to wait at the Nabouwalu Jetty due to another overstaying its allotted schedule.

Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the need for MSAF to fulfill its responsibility in properly programming and coordinating vessel schedules to avert such conflicts, which can lead to delays and operational inefficiencies. He stressed the importance of maintaining an orderly system for the use of wharf, port, or jetty facilities to avoid collisions in vessel arrivals and departures.

George Goundar, owner of Goundar Shipping, has voiced frustration over ongoing scheduling issues, which he attributes to systemic corruption and interference from MSAF board members. Goundar highlighted the presence of corrupt marine checkers at Natovi and Nabouwalu, which he claims are perpetuating these scheduling problems.

The Ministry of Transport has committed to working alongside MSAF to enhance operational planning and prevent similar occurrences in the future. They are actively seeking responses from MSAF regarding these issues.

Past discussions surrounding MSAF have revealed persistent challenges within the maritime industry, particularly involving Goundar Shipping Limited. Issues such as staff misconduct in ticket sales and passenger overloading have been highlighted by MSAF. Addressing these systemic issues remains critical for ensuring compliance with safety regulations and enhancing the overall safety and reliability of maritime services in Fiji.

As the Ministry and MSAF move forward, their collaboration aims to ensure safer and more efficient sea travel, restoring public trust and supporting the integrity of Fiji’s maritime transportation sector. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to addressing the core challenges within the maritime industry and establishing a more robust regulatory framework for vessel operations.
