Remote and maritime communities in Fiji are poised to significantly improve their access to essential services, including education, healthcare, financial services, and communication, thanks to expanded digital networks. The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) has solidified this initiative by signing contracts under the Universal Service Obligation with Digicel Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited.
TAF Chairman David Eyre emphasized that these agreements signify a critical transition from policy formulation to tangible delivery of services. This development is aimed at empowering Fijians living in underserved areas, allowing them to tap into digital markets and access opportunities that have previously been out of reach.
Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua highlighted the project as a vital component of the National Digital Strategy. Under this plan, Digicel Fiji will be connecting 33 communities in Lau Province, benefiting more than 3,200 residents, while Telecom Fiji Limited will extend its services to 30 communities across the Lomaiviti, Namosi, and Navosa regions, aiding over 2,600 individuals.
Ultimately, the program aspires to reach a total of 240 communities and serve approximately 23,000 Fijians nationwide. The services will operate through satellite-based managed Wi-Fi centers, providing affordable data vouchers to enhance digital access.
The first phase of the initiative prioritizes 126 sites, which is set to commence in the first week of January and is expected to assist around 11,000 people. Both Digicel and Telecom Fiji Limited are committed to ensuring that the project’s benefits go far beyond just technological advancements, focusing on creating equity, opportunity, and fostering long-term positive impacts within the communities.
TAF will oversee the project to guarantee transparency, accountability, and successful outcomes for the Fijian population, ensuring that this ambitious undertaking becomes a cornerstone for enhanced connectivity and access to vital services across the nation. This initiative marks a hopeful step forward in bridging the digital divide in Fiji.
