Fiji Rolls Out QR Pay for Cashless Public Transport

Fiji Rolls Out QR Pay for Cashless Public Transport

The Fijian national e-Transport system is set to launch a new QR Pay feature by October 20, which aims to enhance its cashless transport network. This feature, compatible with both Android and iOS devices, will allow passengers to make payments directly via their smartphones, eliminating the need for physical cards and making travel more convenient.

The introduction was announced during the E-Ticketing Steering Committee meeting held on October 9, which included government representatives, members of the Fiji Bus Operators Association, and technology partners to discuss the system’s advancements. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized that the QR Pay feature marks a significant milestone in Fiji’s digital transformation, aimed at enhancing public convenience and improving overall service efficiency.

Kamikamica noted that collaboration among government bodies, bus operators, and digital service providers is crucial for the continued success of the e-Transport system. Currently, the platform has shown strong growth, with more than 492,000 registered cards, 320,000 active monthly users, and an average of 128,000 daily users. Furthermore, the mobile app has exceeded 95,000 downloads, linking an impressive 65,000 unique cards.

This development aligns well with recent initiatives aimed at modernizing Fiji’s public transport system, particularly as earlier challenges regarding the electronic ticketing system introduced years ago demonstrated the need for more robust solutions. The government has been responsive to user feedback and is now moving towards a more integrated system that could include real-time tracking, enhanced usability, and potentially more modes of transport.

The QR Pay feature is not just a handy addition; it is part of a broader strategic vision to streamline public transportation in Fiji, promising a more efficient and eco-friendly experience for all commuters. As the rollout progresses, there is a hopeful outlook that these advancements will contribute positively to the public transport landscape, making it more accessible and reliable for the citizenry.
