Remote and maritime communities in Fiji are on the verge of a significant transformation regarding access to essential services like education, healthcare, financial services, and communication due to enhanced digital networks. This advancement was made possible by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF), which recently solidified a vital initiative through contracts signed under the Universal Service Obligation with Digicel Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited.

TAF Chairman David Eyre emphasized that these agreements represent a crucial shift from merely developing policies to actually delivering services that empower Fijians in underserved areas. With improved connectivity, residents will be able to engage with digital markets and seize opportunities that were previously unattainable.

The Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, underscored the project’s significance as a key element of the National Digital Strategy. According to the plan, Digicel Fiji is tasked with connecting 33 communities in Lau Province, positively impacting over 3,200 residents. Meanwhile, Telecom Fiji Limited will extend its services to 30 communities across the Lomaiviti, Namosi, and Navosa regions, thereby aiding more than 2,600 individuals.

The overarching aim of the program is to reach 240 communities, benefiting approximately 23,000 Fijians nationwide. Implementation will utilize satellite-based managed Wi-Fi centers, which will offer affordable data vouchers to promote broader digital access.

The initial phase of this initiative prioritizes 126 sites, with operations commencing in the first week of January. This phase is anticipated to assist around 11,000 individuals. Both Digicel and Telecom Fiji Limited are committed to ensuring the project’s impact extends beyond technological improvements, focusing on fostering equity, opportunities, and long-term benefits for the communities involved.

TAF will monitor the project closely to ensure transparency, accountability, and successful outcomes for the Fijian population. This ambitious undertaking is poised to be a cornerstone for enhancing connectivity and facilitating access to vital services across the nation, marking a hopeful step towards bridging the digital divide in Fiji.
