The Health Ministry is intensifying its battle against dengue fever and other diseases carried by mosquitoes through a comprehensive initiative. This proactive program involves the installation of fly and mosquito traps in high-risk areas across Viti Levu, aiming to curb the spread of these illnesses.

The installation efforts have already commenced at key locations, including Nausori Air Terminal, Nadi Market, and Nadi International Airport. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu highlighted that this initiative is part of the National Dengue Fever and Other Vector-Borne Disease Control Program for the years 2025 to 2027. The overarching goal is to enhance community protection and bolster public health measures.

Significant support for this initiative comes from the GX Foundation, which has pledged $2 million for equipment necessary to combat mosquito-borne diseases. The provided resources include 450 mosquito lamps, 2,000 rapid dengue test kits, 500 bed nets, and 20,000 sticky fly traps. These tools are critical in the fight against dengue and other vector-borne illnesses.

In addition to installations at airports and markets, the plan includes targeting public spaces like the Colonial War Memorial Hospital to maximize the program’s reach. Officials emphasize the importance of community involvement, urging the public to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. This collaborative effort will ensure that the traps and preventive measures are as effective as possible in reducing disease transmission.

Overall, this initiative reflects a committed approach to addressing public health challenges and is expected to make a significant impact on the health of the communities in Viti Levu.
