The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection in Fiji has launched an impactful initiative to empower vulnerable communities through a Basic Pattern and Garment Making Training. Hosted at the Fiji National University’s School of Executive Management, Fashion and Design, this week-long program aims to equip participants with skills essential for sustainable livelihoods.
This initiative brought together 14 participants from diverse backgrounds, including the Koroipita Model Town, Daulomani Safe Home, and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities’ Western branch, alongside carers from the Golden Age Home in Lautoka. Designed as a Training of Trainers (TOT) program, it enables attendees to disseminate their newfound knowledge within their communities, fostering further growth and income-generating opportunities through tailoring. For carers from the Golden Age Home, these skills will directly aid in clothing the residents.
A notable aspect of the program is that nine participants are beneficiaries of Social Welfare under the ministry’s existing protection schemes, ensuring that the training reaches those in most need. Earlier this year, the ministry supplied sewing machines to participating organizations, thereby initiating small tailoring projects. This recent training enhances technical knowledge and promotes self-reliance, aiming for long-term sustainability.
Aligned with other governmental and local organization programs, this initiative supports marginalized communities across Fiji. Similar programs, including those supported by the Australian Pacific Training Coalition, have been instrumental in providing residents with the skills required for self-reliance and economic activity.
By focusing on skill development, the Ministry is inspiring hope and providing real pathways for change. These efforts are not only transforming individual lives but are also strengthening community bonds, improving resilience, and fostering economic independence within the region. Through empowerment and education, the ministry is ensuring a brighter future for vulnerable groups, contributing significantly to the broader social and economic fabric of Fiji.
