Fiji is poised to improve its border security and streamline travel processes following the Cabinet’s recent approval of two innovative systems designed to enhance the efficiency and safety of the entry process into the country.
The first initiative, known as the Advance Passenger Information (API) system, will allow immigration officers to screen travelers before they arrive in Fiji. As passengers check in at international airports, their essential passport details—including name, date of birth, nationality, and flight information—will be sent electronically to Fijian authorities. This proactive security measure is aimed at identifying potential security or immigration threats ahead of time.
The second initiative, the Passenger Name Record (PNR) system, will provide authorities with a more detailed insight into airline bookings. This comprehensive overview includes not only travel itineraries but also vital information such as passenger contact details, payment methods, travel companions, and booking history. The use of this data will empower authorities to analyze travel patterns and identify any suspicious activities earlier in the process.
Cabinet officials noted that these two systems work synergistically, with the API concentrating on who is traveling to Fiji, while the PNR provides additional context regarding their travel motives.
