The Fiji Police Force has raised concerns about the growing trend of reckless and impatient driving across the nation. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kasiano Vusonilawe has pointed out that many drivers are ignoring fundamental roadway rules, particularly when it comes to yielding to other vehicles and showing respect for fellow road users.
ACP Vusonilawe specifically highlighted that drivers of public service vehicles are often at the forefront of exhibiting poor driving habits. The police have noted a worrying increase in incidents where basic traffic rules are overlooked, contributing to congestion on the roads.
“The observations from traffic officers reveal a distinct lack of patience among drivers,” Vusonilawe noted. “Fundamental rules such as adhering to the right-hand rule and yielding when turning are frequently neglected. Some drivers exhibit a complete lack of road etiquette.”
The Assistant Commissioner is urging all drivers to practice patience and comply with traffic regulations, especially in busy areas. He emphasized the alarming number of incidents involving public service vehicle drivers who disregard established traffic protocols, which further hinders road safety.
In response to this situation, Irimaia Rokosawa, the Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority, acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the agency is actively exploring ways to enhance driving standards in Fiji. “Our aim is to continuously improve driving regulations and behaviors,” Rokosawa stated.
Impatience and reckless driving not only result in increased road congestion but also heighten the risk of accidents within Fiji. Authorities are urging all motorists to remain calm and adhere to traffic laws, ensuring safer roads for everyone.
