The Fiji Police Force is raising alarm over road safety as numerous drivers continue to flout traffic regulations during the busy morning hours. Matelita Daveta, Assistant Officer in Charge of Traffic, noted that this troubling trend has persisted since the start of the year, despite consistent appeals for improved compliance among drivers.

Daveta highlighted the increased dangers faced by police officers who are deployed to manage traffic, often stationed in the middle of bustling roads without any protective barriers. She urged motorists to be more vigilant, especially in light of five accidents involving students reported this month, one of which led to a tragic fatality.

The statistics are alarming: the death toll on the roads in January rose to six, a stark increase from two fatalities in the same month the previous year. So far, February has already seen one death, a shocking contrast to the zero fatalities recorded in February of last year. This significant rise in accidents has been largely attributed to driver negligence. Daveta mentioned that the Police Force is actively collaborating with the Land Transport Authority to address these critical safety concerns.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to prioritize the safety of student pedestrians at all times, as the community addresses these urgent issues. Enhancing compliance with road rules is essential not only for protecting students but also for ensuring the safety of all community members. With collective efforts and heightened awareness, there is hope for a safer driving environment for everyone.
