Fiji revives Public Works Department to boost rural road connectivity

The Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has announced the official re-establishment of the Public Works Department (PWD), following a Cabinet decision aimed at enhancing infrastructure across Fiji. The newly revitalized PWD has commenced operations, focusing on improving access to rural roads and addressing the long-standing issues of neglected infrastructure.

According to Minister Tuisawau, teams are already on the ground working actively on several rural roads to enhance connectivity for communities that previously faced challenges due to poor road conditions. He emphasized that divisional offices are back in operation under divisional engineers who will supervise the ongoing work and plan for further upgrades.

This revitalization of the PWD is seen as necessary for the government to respond more effectively to infrastructure needs, especially in rural and remote regions. Minister Tuisawau remarked, “It’s a progressive re-establishment,” indicating that while some properties of the PWD remain with the Ministry of Civil Service and other departments, efforts are underway to optimize resources for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Moreover, the PWD is collaborating with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to ensure that both departments complement each other’s efforts rather than duplicating work. This strategic partnership is part of a broader approach to utilize financial resources wisely while addressing critical road maintenance and property upkeep.

Minister Tuisawau also stressed the importance of inclusivity in this initiative, assuring that the re-establishment of the PWD aims to guarantee that all roads, regardless of their classification, receive the necessary maintenance and improvements. This initiative reflects a shift in governmental priorities with the new Coalition Government, putting infrastructure development at the forefront of its agenda, especially for areas that have historically been overlooked.

The revival of the PWD and the deployment of heavy machinery into various regions highlight a committed effort towards enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure. This initiative not only underscores the government’s recognition of the importance of reliable road access for rural communities but also serves to boost economic activity and improve the overall quality of life for residents across Fiji. As these developments unfold, they hold the promise of significantly better connectivity and infrastructure across the nation, fostering a hopeful outlook for the future.
