The Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working to enhance and maintain the nation’s diplomatic missions worldwide, as emphasized in a recent session of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence. The ministry’s efforts involve ongoing renovations, strategic planning, and support measures for diplomatic staff to ensure the effectiveness of Fiji’s foreign representation.
In the hearing, Director of Finance Luke Rovosoni highlighted the need for significant upgrades to various government properties in locations such as London, New Zealand, Australia, and Brussels, citing aging infrastructure, increasing operational costs, and complex geopolitical conditions as pressing challenges.
Rovosoni noted the advancements in several critical projects, indicating that last year the second secretary’s residence in London was completely renovated, and the current renovations at Fiji House, the residence of the head of mission, are now in their second phase. To minimize disruptions during these upgrades, the Ministry has effectively relocated staff to alternative offices financed by the Ministry of Finance, ensuring the continuity of diplomatic functions.
Despite the challenges faced, Rovosoni expressed a commitment to maintaining the government properties abroad, stating that careful planning, phased renovations, and diligent budget management are essential for sustaining these vital assets. The proactive approach reflects Fiji’s dedication to strengthening its diplomatic presence and adapting to the ever-evolving global landscape.
