In a recent Ba Provincial Council meeting, Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo emphasized the Fijian Government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and advancement of the iTaukei people and the broader Fijian populace. He commended chiefs, government officials, provincial leaders, and community members for their dedication to preserving Fijian customs and traditions, which play a crucial role in maintaining Fiji’s national identity.
Minister Vosarogo highlighted a significant milestone in Fijian history: the restoration of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga, or the Great Council of Chiefs, on December 25, 2022. This pivotal event marked the return of the council after a 16-year hiatus, reinstating it as the principal institution managing iTaukei affairs.
The government has launched several significant reforms to empower iTaukei development. These reforms include increased budget allocations for the iTaukei Affairs Board to strengthen resources for various local leadership roles, such as turaganikoro, mata ni tikina, and turaga ni vanua. Additionally, they have broadened opportunities for education, business development, and community progress by providing low-interest loans specifically for iTaukei-owned enterprises. The reduction of Crown Land lease charges from 10% to 8% is another measure aimed at alleviating financial pressures for the community. Moreover, with the Cabinet’s endorsement of a national plan for preserving indigenous languages, the government has shown its dedication to cultural revitalization.
These initiatives underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the iTaukei community while fostering unity and inclusive growth for all Fijians. The measures align with nationwide efforts to strengthen traditional governance structures, expand educational and economic opportunities, and safeguard cultural heritage. Through these comprehensive strategies, the government is laying the groundwork for a sustainable and empowered future for the iTaukei people and Fijian society as a whole.
The strategic planning and collaborative efforts showcased in these meetings reflect a promising path for the iTaukei community, pointing towards a future of socio-economic growth and cultural prosperity. By prioritizing traditional governance, education, and infrastructure advancements, the government is reinforcing a pledge to build a thriving and cohesive societal framework in Fiji.
