At a recent Ba Provincial Council meeting, Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo reiterated the Fijian Government’s dedication to safeguarding and advancing the interests of the iTaukei people and all Fijians. He praised the chiefs, government representatives, provincial officials, and community members for preserving Fijian customs and traditions, essential for maintaining national identity.
Highlighting a pivotal moment in Fijian history, Mr. Vosarogo recalled the restoration of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga (Great Council of Chiefs) on December 25, 2022. This event marked the return of the council after 16 years, underscoring its importance as the foremost institution overseeing iTaukei affairs.
The government has introduced several key reforms aimed at empowering iTaukei development. These include increased budget allocations for the iTaukei Affairs Board, which will enhance resources for various local leadership roles such as turaganikoro, mata ni tikina, and turaga ni vanua. They have also expanded opportunities for education, business growth, and community development, including access to low-interest loans tailored for iTaukei-owned businesses. Additionally, a reduction in Crown Land lease charges from 10% to 8% is intended to ease financial pressures. Furthermore, the Cabinet has endorsed a national plan to preserve indigenous languages, demonstrating a commitment to cultural revitalization.
These measures reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to uplift the iTaukei community while promoting unity and inclusive development for all citizens. The initiatives align with ongoing efforts across Fiji to bolster traditional governance structures, improve educational and economic opportunities, and protect cultural heritage. Through these comprehensive strategies, the government aims to foster a sustainable and empowered future for the iTaukei people and all Fijians.
The collective efforts and strategic planning described in these meetings show a hopeful trajectory for the iTaukei community, signaling a future of socio-economic growth and cultural prosperity. By prioritizing traditional governance, education, and infrastructure improvements, there is a strengthened promise for a thriving and cohesive societal framework in Fiji.
