Fiji Remembrance Day: Honoring the Quiet Heroes Behind the Uniform

More than 50 residents of Valelevu came together at the Lomavata Methodist Church on the morning of Remembrance Day to pay tribute to Fiji’s military and police forces. Ex-servicemen and officers who could not make it to the main ceremony in Labasa participated in this local observance.

During the service, Methodist Church Minister Dr. Rev Mosese Salusalu highlighted the vital role of families, particularly the wives of servicemen, in managing their households and children as their partners serve overseas. He emphasized that the support these families provide is often underappreciated but essential.

The emotional tones of the day were underscored by the sounding of the Last Post, a bugle call that honors those who have lost their lives in service. A poignant moment arose for Nisa Saqasaqa, who laid a wreath in memory of her late husband, ex-serviceman Iliesa Saqasaqa, who passed away in 2000.

Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 across Commonwealth nations, commemorating military personnel who lost their lives since the conclusion of the First World War. It also remembers sacrifices made during World War II, peacekeeping missions, and modern military operations.

This year’s gathering not only paid respect to the fallen but also fostered a sense of community among those who share similar experiences of loss and resilience. It serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds formed through the sacrifices of service members and the families who support them.

Similar commemorations across Fiji reveal a broader narrative of remembrance, underscoring the pain and pride that families navigate while honoring the legacies of their loved ones. These heartfelt tributes encapsulate the spirit of resilience and hope that characterizes Fiji’s observance of Remembrance Day, inspiring future generations to uphold the values of courage and dedication that define their freedom and safety today.
