The Office of the President of Fiji has received a new executive sedan as a gift from the People’s Republic of China, marking a significant gesture of goodwill and cooperation between the two nations. President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu expressed his gratitude during the ceremonial handover, underscoring Fiji’s steadfast commitment to the One China Policy.
In his remarks, President Lalabalavu highlighted the enduring partnership between Fiji and China, recognizing China as an essential development partner. He referred to the extensive cooperation that has flourished between the countries across multiple sectors including health, agriculture, education, and infrastructure. The President also noted the impactful efforts China has made in critical areas like malaria control, as well as the vital support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, which included the recent renovations of a wing at State House completed in 2025.
Wang Yuan, the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Fiji, emphasized that the donation of the Hongqi H9 executive sedan is a testament to the deep-rooted friendship shared by Fiji and China. He reminded the audience that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China and celebrated the 50th anniversary of these ties last year.
Wang expressed a positive outlook on the future of Fiji-China relations, indicating that the new vehicle would assist in the daily operations of the Office of the President and further strengthen the bilateral partnership. He reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development initiatives, suggesting a promising path forward for continued collaboration between the two countries. This donation not only enhances the functional capabilities of the Fijian presidency but also symbolizes the enduring bond that has developed over decades of diplomatic engagement.
