The government is intensifying its efforts to combat the escalating termite infestation that is causing significant damage in areas like Lautoka and Labasa. This issue has become increasingly severe, affecting homes, infrastructure, crops, and personal belongings.
Fisheries and Forests Minister Alitia Bainivalu has highlighted that Fiji is currently facing challenges from two particularly destructive species of termites, including the Asian subterranean termite. This species is notably one of the most harmful, with a single colony capable of housing up to two million termites.
In response to the growing threat, the Ministry is ramping up inspections of timber treatment facilities and enhancing public awareness campaigns. It aims to educate consumers about appropriate timber usage and building designs that can mitigate the risk of termite damage. Bainivalu emphasized the importance of a multi-faceted approach, stating that termites are more prevalent when timber is easily accessible or incorrectly utilized in construction.
To this end, she outlined that effective protection strategies must incorporate proper building design, correct timber specifications, and the use of durable or treated wood, along with physical barriers to limit termite access. Bainivalu further noted that relying solely on chemical treatments is insufficient; adherence to good construction standards and accurate timber specifications is crucial for effective prevention.
In addition to these measures, the Ministry is investigating new regulations for timber marketing and collaborating closely with the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission. This partnership aims to ensure that timber retailers uphold required standards, enabling consumers to make informed choices that will protect their homes from termite infestations.
With ongoing efforts and a comprehensive approach, there is hope that Fiji will successfully manage and mitigate the impacts of termite damage, preserving not only homes and infrastructure but also promoting sustainable building practices in the future.
