Rising sea levels and ineffective drainage systems pose significant threats to agricultural lands, according to Tomasi Tunabuna, the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways. He stated that saltwater intrusion has emerged as a critical challenge for local farmers, jeopardizing soil fertility and diminishing crop yields.
“Saltwater intrusion into our agricultural lands due to rising sea levels and global warming is one of the most pressing issues we face,” Tunabuna remarked in a recent address. In response to this pressing challenge, the government has re-established the national drainage board with aims to enhance water management and mitigate waterlogging in farmlands.
Although there have been no formal complaints regarding dust pollution from roads near farmlands in Navua, the Minister expressed concern over the broader impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity within coastal communities. In light of these challenges, he reaffirmed that the Ministry is actively collaborating with stakeholders to bolster resilience and protect vulnerable farmlands across the nation.
This situation is not unique to Tunabuna’s district, as farmers throughout Fiji are facing the dire consequences of saltwater intrusion and inadequate drainage systems. Similar concerns were highlighted by local farmers in Wailevu, Labasa, where saltwater has significantly impacted cane crops, leading to production declines of nearly 50%. These farmers have long called for improved drainage management, which the government is now starting to address by enhancing floodgates and undertaking drainage improvements.
