Fiji Kicks Off Nationwide Child Protection Outreach Ahead of World Children's Day

Fiji Ramps Up Child Protection Outreach Ahead of Global Observances

Child abuse and neglect remain critical issues that require urgent action, and last Saturday, the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection partnered with Save the Children Fiji to conduct outreach activities in Qauia, Lami, and Filafou aimed at enhancing child safety.

During these sessions, officials from the Department of Children and the Department of Women interacted with children, working to improve their understanding of their rights, safe practices, and the support systems available to them. The Ministry emphasized the importance of involving children in discussions regarding decisions that affect their lives, reinforcing the notion that every child has the right to be heard, protected, and empowered.

This outreach initiative is particularly timely as it prepares for the upcoming national symposium, which will celebrate International Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day, as well as events leading into the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Minister Lynda Tabuya has previously stressed the urgent need to combat child abuse and neglect in Fiji, using these notable observances as a platform to reaffirm the country’s commitment to children’s rights. With alarming statistics showing that 1,477 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in 2023, these outreach efforts play a pivotal role in raising community awareness and implementing protective measures.

As Fiji seeks to enhance its child protection systems, this proactive stance represents a hopeful vision for the future. By equipping children with essential knowledge and underscoring the role of community involvement, there is significant potential for progress in creating a safer environment for all children across the nation. Through collaborative initiatives, Fiji can aspire to foster a future where children are free to thrive without fear or harm.
