Fiji Pushes Forward With National Cancer Plan Despite Funding Shortages

The National Cancer Prevention and Control Plan in Fiji is currently experiencing delays primarily due to funding limitations and a shortage of staff. According to Dr. Devina Nand, who heads the Wellness division, the draft of the plan is nearly completed and has been developed based on robust technical work, although the Health Ministry faces difficulties in its implementation due to a lack of dedicated personnel.

The plan emphasizes a multifaceted approach to healthcare, focusing on disease prevention, health promotion, early diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care. Dr. Nand highlighted the importance of addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which correlate with several cancer risk factors, by improving health system responses and reducing modifiable risk factors.

Moreover, the plan includes a thorough examination of the healthcare workforce, cancer medications and supplies, financial resources, infrastructure, health information systems, and governance. Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, acknowledged that while some issues raised were new to him, he is committed to elevating these concerns to the Minister and proposing them for consideration in the upcoming budget.

Despite the current setbacks, the National Cancer Prevention and Control Plan is seen as a significant advancement in Fiji’s fight against cancer, aiming to enhance coordination and build healthcare capacity. The government’s focus on strengthening cancer care corresponds with broader health initiatives that address the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the country.

Collectively, these efforts reflect a renewed commitment to improving health outcomes for the population, fostering hope for a more resilient healthcare system in Fiji. As stakeholders continue to push for better resources and infrastructure, there is optimism that these initiatives will lead to enhanced cancer care and prevention measures, ultimately benefiting individuals affected by this critical health issue.
