Fiji Pushes for Middle East Peace in UAE Talks

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu engaged in discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, focusing on global initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability in the Middle East. In a statement made during a parliamentary session, Rabuka expressed his satisfaction at receiving a call from the President, who shared the positive results of the high-level meetings held in the UAE.

During these discussions, the Fijian President conveyed the success of his talks with UAE officials, highlighting their commitment to supporting Fiji, especially regarding the nation’s involvement in international peacekeeping operations. Rabuka emphasized that this engagement reflects Fiji’s steadfast dedication to contributing to peace and security in the Middle East, stemming from its long-standing history of participating in UN peacekeeping missions.

This announcement comes at a crucial time as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are set to deploy approximately 200 peacekeeping troops to Gaza City. Their efforts aim to support the implementation of a recently brokered ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, following over two years of devastating conflict that has left much of Gaza in a humanitarian crisis after extensive negotiations led by key international and regional mediators.

Mr. Rabuka underscored that Fiji’s proactive diplomatic efforts and ongoing dialogue affirm the nation’s relevance in global peace initiatives. He noted Fiji’s commitment to international peacekeeping as a vital aspect of its foreign policy. This commitment resonates with Fiji’s previous participation in significant missions, such as those in Lebanon and during the Malayan emergency campaign.

The Prime Minister’s comments illustrate a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s role on the world stage, showcasing its capacity to be an active participant in international peace efforts. As Fiji continues to champion peace and stability, it underscores the country’s resilience and dedication to fostering collaborative solutions to global challenges.
