Recent research conducted by the National Council for Persons with Disability and Outpatient Departments has revealed that just twenty percent of transport facilities in Fiji are accessible to individuals with disabilities. This striking statistic highlights the persistent challenges that many Fijians face in accessing essential transportation services.
In light of these findings, Minister for Social Protection Sashi Kiran addressed the issue during a parliamentary session earlier this week, advocating for enhanced transportation accessibility for people with disabilities throughout the country. Kiran commended the Fiji Roads Authority for recognizing these pressing concerns and underscored the necessity of constructing roads and footpaths that cater to individuals using mobility devices, as well as those with visual impairments.
The minister pointed to recent improvements at major airports as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving transportation accessibility for persons with disabilities. She expressed gratitude towards various ministries and statutory bodies for their roles in creating these noticeable enhancements. However, Kiran noted that considerable work remains, particularly at smaller airports and within marine transport systems, identifying these sectors as crucial for future development efforts.
Kiran called for targeted initiatives to boost accessibility at smaller airports and seaports, as the current infrastructure does not adequately support individuals with mobility challenges.
