Fiji is making a strong case for increased global support for Small Island Developing States in the realm of cybersecurity, a message that gained traction during the recent Singapore International Cyber Week. Tupou’tuah Baravilala, who serves as the Director-General for Digital Government Transformation, emphasized the need for smaller nations to secure a larger voice in international cybersecurity discussions, particularly within platforms like the United Nations. She cautioned that without proper inclusion and representation, these nations remain vulnerable to a variety of cyber threats and coercive tactics.
Baravilala also detailed Fiji’s National Digital Strategy for 2025–2030, which is designed to cultivate a secure and digitally empowered society. This strategy underscores the importance of regional collaboration, supplemented by initiatives such as the Lagatoi and Ocean of Peace Declarations. In her discussions with cybersecurity representatives from both Australia and Israel, she aimed to strengthen cooperation and bolster regional resilience against digital threats.
This emphasis on cybersecurity dovetails with earlier statements from Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who pointed out the increasing risks posed by cybercrime as the country transitions towards a digital economy. At the CyberSec Symposium in Suva, Kamikamica stressed the urgent necessity of implementing effective cybersecurity measures and announced the upcoming launch of Fiji’s National Cybersecurity Strategy, designed to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive data.
Fiji’s proactive approach to enhancing its cybersecurity landscape, which has involved establishing a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and engaging in international agreements such as the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, illustrates a resolute commitment to combating escalating cyber threats. These initiatives not only focus on protecting Fiji but aim to encourage collaborative approaches among Pacific nations facing similar cybersecurity challenges.
