Fiji Plans Public Service Makeover with Excellence Framework

Fiji Public Service Reform Gains Momentum With Excellence Awards Framework

Opposition member Jone Usamate has called for a comprehensive reform in the way government ministries provide services, highlighting the necessity for greater efficiency, accountability, and long-term performance. In a recent speech in Parliament, Usamate proposed the adoption of the Fiji Business Excellence Awards framework, citing its successful application in cultivating world-class organizations across both public and private sectors.

Usamate emphasized that ministries should prioritize key areas such as leadership, strategic planning, customer service, data-driven management, and human resources. He pointed out that focusing on these elements is crucial for promoting continuous improvement within public services, which would ultimately lead to enhanced performance throughout the nation.

Adding to this conversation, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru announced that his ministry has already integrated the awards framework into its transformation strategy, which aims to foster innovation, accountability, and operational excellence. Saukuru celebrated the remarkable achievements of the Fiji National Rugby League Bulikula girls team, who overcame financial challenges to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Australia, showcasing their resilience and skill by successfully defeating Canada and Nigeria in their qualifiers.

Moreover, the National Youth Band has also garnered recognition by receiving the One Star Award at the 2025 National Convention on Innovation and Quality. This accolade reflects the ministry’s dedication to quality and data-driven decision-making. Saukuru remarked that these achievements are indicative of a broader initiative to implement practices of continuous improvement across all divisions of the ministry, paving the way for a transformative future that prioritizes culture and innovation.

The perspectives shared by Usamate and the initiatives launched by Saukuru collectively demonstrate a commitment among government officials to elevate service delivery and outcomes in Fiji. These advancements signal a promising trajectory for the nation’s governance, with the potential for improved public service performance and an empowering environment for youth through innovation and inclusivity. The blend of a structured framework and effective leadership indicates the likelihood of significant positive transformations within Fiji’s public service sector.
