Fiji Evicts 124 Families Over Aging Housing Estate

Fiji Public Housing Evictions Over Safety Risks Spark Relocation Plan

One hundred and twenty-four families living at the Public Rental Board (PRB) property on Mead Road in Nabua, Fiji, have been served with a two-month eviction notice due to serious safety concerns. PRB General Manager Timoci Naleba stated that engineers have deemed the structure, which has stood for over 70 years, unsafe and at high risk during earthquakes. Consequently, immediate vacating is required to protect the residents.

The PRB is closely coordinating with the Housing Authority to facilitate the relocation of affected residents, prioritizing them for alternative housing options. Families are encouraged to seek assistance from Housing Authority offices for necessary guidance through this transition. After the property is vacated, the PRB will engage with experts to decide on the land’s future use.

Naleba emphasized that ensuring tenant safety is legally mandated and paramount to their decision. He explained that PRB has been engaging in relocation discussions for over a year, with plans for phased demolition of the estate. Demolition will commence with Block 5 by the end of 2025, followed by Blocks 1 to 4 in 2026, underscoring the urgency due to the estate’s deteriorating condition.

These efforts are part of PRB’s alignment with government initiatives to meet Fiji’s housing needs, particularly concerning affordable housing. The pressing demand is demonstrated by over 200 applications received by PRB this fiscal year, and the projection of needing around 1,600 new affordable units each year. PRB and government programs aim to address these demands through ongoing development projects and support to vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the PRB’s dedication to community safety is apparent as the board actively tackles issues within its estates, including evicting tenants involved in illegal activities. Security checks are consistently evaluated and upgraded to ensure resident safety. Through these joint efforts with the Housing Authority, the focus is on transforming current challenges into opportunities for developing safer, community-oriented environments for families in Fiji.
