A comprehensive strategy that includes mandatory school programs and enhanced community dialogue is vital to addressing the narcotics crisis in the nation. This viewpoint was highlighted by Tavua Town Council special administrator Rajendra Raghlu during the recent consultation on the Counter Narcotics Bill held at the Tavualevu Village hall.

Mr. Raghlu stressed the importance of differentiating between drug traffickers and individuals suffering from addiction, advocating for expanded educational outreach. He proposed that narcotics education not be limited to pilot programs but rather integrated as a required element of the school curriculum nationwide.

He stated, “Rather than piloting, I think we should bring it to make it compulsory in every school.” He emphasized the critical role of student councils, encouraging them as leaders to help identify issues related to drug use early on, allowing for proactive measures to be taken.

Mr. Raghlu’s vision encompasses reaching all areas of Fiji, whether urban or remote, with narcotics education, as he believes that it will be beneficial in preventing drug-related issues from escalating.

In addition to school initiatives, he called for community engagement through village meetings that prioritize the voices of young people. This inclusive approach aims to delve into the underlying reasons for drug use among youths. He pointed out that many young individuals come from supportive families but still fall into addiction, suggesting that factors such as lack of affection or family problems might contribute to their choices.

Despite recognizing the complexities associated with law enforcement in combatting drug-related challenges, Mr. Raghlu expressed confidence that through unified efforts, it is possible to tackle the issue effectively.

This optimistic stance signals a proactive effort towards addressing narcotics problems by equipping the youth with essential knowledge and fostering community support networks. Engaging students and families alike may initiate a crucial dialogue that unearths the core issues behind drug use, ultimately contributing to a healthier society.
