Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, condemned the irresponsible waste disposal practices and stressed the potential risks this poses to both community health and the region’s vulnerable marine ecosystem. He stated, “Such behaviour threatens community wellbeing,” emphasizing the urgent need for a collective response to the growing litter crisis.
The Ministry was notified of the issue on November 13, 2025, and has since initiated investigations in cooperation with local authorities and hotels in Taveuni and Qamea to trace the origin of the waste. Although the source has not yet been confirmed, officials are treating the situation with utmost seriousness. A joint inspection involving Ministry representatives and relevant stakeholders is set to take place over the weekend and into early next week.
Minister Bulitavu highlighted the importance of adhering to environmental guidelines as stipulated by the Environment Management Act of 2005, which includes a structured waste management and permitting system that all facilities must follow.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to the local community for taking responsible actions in cleaning up the marine debris and has planned to engage with them during the inspection to provide support for the ongoing investigation.
