President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu publicly expressed gratitude to Brigadier General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during a ceremony honoring 156 peacekeeping soldiers who had returned from Iraq. This marked a significant moment as it was the first time the President acknowledged the Commander’s leadership following the changes that occurred after the 2022 General Elections, which led to the establishment of a new government.

In his remarks, Ratu Naiqama praised Commander Kalouniwai for his steadfastness and unity with his team during a crucial transitional period for the nation. He highlighted the importance of respecting the people’s democratic choice and acknowledged the challenges that have arisen in Fiji’s political landscape over the years, particularly as the country celebrates its 55th year of independence.

Commander Kalouniwai responded to the President’s commendations with humility, asserting that the military simply fulfilled its duty by remaining committed to their core responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of honoring the democratic process and respecting the will of the electorate.

Additionally, Commander Kalouniwai took the opportunity to thank his troops for their dedicated service in Iraq. Their peacekeeping mission has now concluded following the United Nations’ decision to withdraw troops, marking the end of a significant chapter in Fiji’s international military engagements.

The sentiments shared between President Ratu Naiqama and Commander Kalouniwai reflect a commitment to strengthening Fiji’s democratic foundations and fostering unity in a multicultural society as the nation moves forward.
