Fiji’s prominent powerlifter Salacieli Koroi is eager and enthusiastic as he prepares for the Oceania Regional Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand, scheduled from November 17 to 21. Koroi, who gained recognition at the age of 21 by securing a silver medal in the Men’s Raw Open 105kg category during the 2023 South Pacific Games, has since established himself as one of the leading figures in the sport. He holds national records in the 105kg category, having achieved a deadlift of 320kg and a total lift of 730kg.
Last year, Koroi took on a leadership role as the coach and handler for the national team at the regional championship. This year, he is looking forward to competing and is determined to win medals across multiple lifts. “Winning in all lifts is the goal. I’ll just give it my best and let my hard work get displayed on the platform,” he expressed.
Competing on the international stage brings its own challenges, particularly when facing world-renowned athletes. Koroi noted the necessity of confidence in such competitions, stating, “These international competitions require a lot of confidence, especially when you compete with other world champions from around the globe.” This competition is set to be intense, with numerous internationally ranked athletes also vying for regional titles.
In addition to the pressures of competition, Koroi highlighted a significant hurdle: funding. The upcoming trip to New Zealand will be self-funded, requiring both the athletes and the sporting body to cover their expenses, a situation that adds stress to an already demanding competition schedule.
As Koroi gears up for the championship, his story reflects the perseverance and dedication found in Fijian athletics, where challenges like funding are offset by the passion for the sport and the motivation to rise to the occasion. With such determination and talent, Koroi remains focused on showcasing his skills and achieving success at the upcoming event, raising hopes for a bright future in Fijian powerlifting.
