In the wake of the tragic death of an on-duty officer, the Fiji Police Force is actively pursuing funding to provide body-worn cameras for its officers and enhance their equipment across the nation. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed that discussions regarding the introduction of body cameras are already underway.

Tudravu emphasized the significance of these cameras in promoting accountability and transparency but noted that implementing such technology goes beyond simply distributing the devices. “You’re talking about technology, you’re talking about funding here. We are trying our best. Discussions have already been made,” he stated.

He further elaborated that the adoption of body cameras requires substantial preparation and infrastructure within the police organization. “It’s easy to say, bring in body cams. When you bring in body cams, you have to have the infrastructure in place within the organization. Where to keep it, where we will download everything that is in the body cam, and all these things come into it. And preparation is already in place. We are looking into it,” Tudravu explained.

As the investigation into the death of Police Constable 8012 Peniasi Racagi continues, the Fiji Police Force is also encouraging the public to pay their respects by signing a condolence book available at their headquarters. This initiative not only honors the fallen officer but also fosters community support during this difficult time.

The push for body-worn cameras reflects a proactive measure towards enhancing police accountability and ensuring that law enforcement operates with the utmost integrity and transparency. This development is a step towards rebuilding trust within the community, highlighting the importance of responsible policing in Fiji.
