Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga recently lauded the Fiji Police Force, describing them as “unsung heroes” pivotal to the nation’s security. Speaking during a parliamentary debate on the police force’s 2020-2021 annual report, Turaga applauded the dedication of officers and the significant sacrifices made by their families, who often navigate disrupted family occasions and restless nights while supporting their loved ones in such a demanding profession.
Turaga acknowledged the hard work exhibited by police officers, mentioning that many of them work shifts that can extend up to 20 hours, frequently placing their service above their own well-being. He highlighted the critical role of officers’ families, stating, “When the family of an officer is supported and cared for, the officer is stronger, the force is stronger, and ultimately our nation is stronger.”
He expressed gratitude toward Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu for his effective leadership and also extended thanks to international partners for their assistance in training and equipping the police force. Turaga pointed to recent successful drug busts as a testament to the professionalism and courage displayed by the police, asserting, “The recent actions send a strong and clear message — no one is above the law.”
In his discussion, Turaga acknowledged the review of the 1965 Police Act as a positive step forward in reforming the force. However, he emphasized that effective policing cannot solely address the nation’s drug and crime issues. He stressed the importance of addressing root causes such as poverty and unemployment, advocating for a collaborative approach that includes police, communities, and faith-based groups to confront these underlying challenges.
These sentiments echoed those of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who earlier acknowledged the sacrifices police officers and their families make during a Christmas service. Rabuka emphasized the vital role of law enforcement in preserving national safety and called for a renewed commitment to core values such as sacrifice and unity.
In light of reports of misconduct among some officers, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua reaffirmed the necessity of integrity within the police force, while also recognizing that most officers are honorable and dedicated. This ongoing conversation within the government reflects a proactive approach to restore public trust in law enforcement. As Fiji faces these challenges, the focus on community collaboration and support offers a hopeful path forward, contributing to a safer and more unified environment for all citizens.
