Fiji Police Ramp Up Festive-Season Safety with Night Checkpoints

The Fiji Police Force is intensifying its operations ahead of the festive season to bolster public safety. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has announced a shift in strategy this year, highlighting increased visibility of officers and the implementation of night checkpoints aimed at ensuring a secure environment for all Fijians.

Tudravu expressed the importance of collaboration with the Land Transport Authority to address potential safety concerns, particularly as both the festive and cyclone seasons are upon them. “We’ve changed our mode of operations and started early. You’ll see more officers on the ground, checkpoints at night, and joint work with the LTA,” he stated.

Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, the Commissioner noted that police cannot ensure safety alone and called for proactive support from all stakeholders. This initiative reflects a broader strategy seen earlier in similar efforts to promote safety during this peak time. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, previously underscored the necessity of personal responsibility for safety, urging residents to be mindful during activities such as traveling, shopping, and enjoying outdoor leisure.

The increased police presence will be noticeable in urban areas, along highways, and at community spots, including schools and picnic areas. By fostering a spirit of shared responsibility, the Fiji Police Force aims to create a safer and more enjoyable holiday atmosphere. This proactive approach not only reinforces safety measures but also encourages the public to work alongside police to reap the benefits of a secure festive environment.

In light of these efforts, there is hope for an incident-free festive season, allowing all residents to celebrate with peace of mind. The collaborative spirit between law enforcement and community members can indeed enhance the joy of the holiday season.
