Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu announced proposed amendments to the Police Act that would empower him to mandate drug testing for officers within the Fiji Police Force. This initiative seeks to bolster integrity and accountability among law enforcement personnel, addressing ongoing concerns regarding substance abuse and misconduct in the ranks.
Currently, drug testing is voluntary, which, according to Tudravu, creates oversight vulnerabilities. The new legislation aims to implement compulsory drug testing during the recruitment process, throughout officers’ service, and at the discretion of the Commissioner. Tudravu articulated that police officers must embody the laws they enforce, emphasizing that having officers with drugs in their system compromises public trust and safety.
Tudravu also highlighted the legislation’s focus on people-centered policing, which seeks to enhance operational effectiveness while safeguarding the rights and safety of both officers and the community they serve. This proposal aligns with previous statements from Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, who indicated a direction toward compulsory drug screening to address the rising instances of drug-related conduct within the police force.
Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has also backed this reform, recognizing the dedication of the majority of officers who strive to serve the public with integrity.
