The Fiji Police Force is set to enhance its tactical response unit as part of a comprehensive effort to modernize policing and address the challenges posed by high-risk crime. Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, announced that the force is currently reviewing and bolstering the specialized capabilities necessary for effectively navigating complex law enforcement scenarios.
The initiative aims to tackle organized crime and other serious public safety threats, which require a level of expertise that ordinary frontline officers might not possess. Naivalurua highlighted the necessity for specialized units that can conduct dangerous operations safely and effectively. “Modern policing requires specialized units capable of managing complex incidents such as high-risk arrests and organized criminal activity that could pose serious threats to public safety,” he remarked.
This tactical response unit is a key component of the Fiji Police’s broader modernization program, intended to enhance operational readiness and response capabilities nationwide. It aims to empower frontline officers to handle perilous situations while ensuring the safety of the communities they serve.
Naivalurua stressed the importance of adherence to strict legal and professional standards in the operation of specialized units. He noted, “As with all policing functions, any specialized units operate within strict operational procedures, professional standards, and established oversight mechanisms,” emphasizing accountability in their operations.
By strengthening specialized capabilities, the Fiji Police Force is not only adapting to the evolving criminal landscape but also fostering a safer environment for its citizens. This proactive approach signifies a commitment to enhancing public safety and building trust within the community.
