The Fiji Police Force is making significant advancements in modernizing its law enforcement strategies through a comprehensive digital transformation. This initiative aims to surmount the challenges posed by outdated technology and infrastructure. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has highlighted the Force’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities in combating modern crimes, particularly cybercrime and human trafficking, which present distinct challenges to law enforcement.
At the launch of the FAIR digital system, a project supported by the International Organization for Migration aimed at combating human trafficking, Tudravu acknowledged the previous inefficiencies arising from inconsistent systems. He pointed out that inadequate infrastructure, especially regarding connectivity, has hampered the police’s ability to respond effectively to crimes. To address this, the police have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a telecommunications provider to create a nationwide wide area network that will digitally connect police stations and community posts across Fiji utilizing fiber technology.
This initiative is a significant stride towards creating a cohesive platform for collaboration among various police units. The FAIR system stands as a testament to the value of data integration and analysis in improving both crime prevention and response strategies. Tudravu has proclaimed that 2026 will be the “year of uniformity,” marking the police’s dedication to synchronizing operations and promoting better coordination among units that have traditionally functioned independently.
The urgency to tackle the increasing threat of cybercrime is highlighted by recent incidents that exposed the limitations in the equipment necessary for extracting and analyzing critical digital evidence. For instance, the police struggled with managing leaked Viber messages that circulated on social media last year. However, thanks to partnerships with international agencies, the Fiji Police now have access to advanced machinery and licensed technology, which significantly enhances their capability to combat online crimes.
