Fiji Police Probe Into Officers Signals New Push for Accountability

Fiji Police Launch Internal Drug Probe, Vows Accountability

The Fiji Police Force is actively investigating several officers suspected of involvement in drug-related offenses, a significant step towards addressing internal corruption and ensuring integrity within the organization. Inspector Usaia Donu from the Serious Organised Crime Unit stated that no officer is above the law and that all cases are being managed according to established protocols.

During an appearance on FBC’s “Your Voice” program, Donu underscored the necessity of voluntary drug testing, which takes place both during recruitment and periodically throughout an officer’s career to uphold a drug-free environment within the force. He emphasized the need for compliance, saying, “Once instructions are given from the hierarchy, officers have to submit. We are a disciplined organization — we have to abide by the rules.”

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reinforced the commitment to accountability, indicating that any officers found involved in drug activities will face legal repercussions as evidence is compiled. He assured the public, “If there is evidence they are implicated, we will take them to court — that’s for sure. But trust the process,” highlighting the importance of accountability in the police’s operations.

This heightened scrutiny follows earlier cases of alleged drug possession and distribution involving officers, demonstrating leadership’s determination to combat misconduct and rebuild public trust in law enforcement. The police leadership has also stressed the need for transparency and community involvement in reporting suspicious activities, which is vital for enhancing accountability among officers. The leadership encourages cooperation from the public, assuring that all reports will be treated confidentially.

As the Fiji Police Force faces these challenges, there remains a hopeful perspective. The ongoing investigation serves as an important opportunity for the department to reaffirm its dedication to ethical standards and strengthen its bond with the communities it serves. Though the current situation is challenging, it can lead to meaningful changes that bolster both the police force and public confidence.
