Five individuals have been issued Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) for careless driving after a viral video revealed reckless behavior along Mead Road last week. The Southern Division Taskforce took swift action, conducting a raid at the Mead Road Housing complex that led to the identification of those involved in the dangerous driving incident.
The police are actively working to locate a sixth individual, who allegedly provided false information to a rental car company in an effort to evade responsibility. Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga has emphasized that the investigation will continue until all responsible parties are held accountable, stating that such reckless actions endanger innocent road users.
In response to claims from a media outlet that the police’s efforts amounted to “lip service,” Commissioner Lutunauga defended the approach, insisting that thorough investigations take time and must be backed by concrete evidence before charges can be made. He urged the media to publish information responsibly, underscoring the importance of accuracy in reporting.
The Fiji Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to road safety, urging all motorists to prioritize responsibility and respect on the roads. Lutunauga noted, “We remain committed to keeping our roads safe for everyone and call on the public to play their part by driving with care and consideration.”
This incident reflects growing concerns about road safety in Fiji and highlights the necessity for increased public adherence to traffic laws. Recent police investigations into similar reckless driving behaviors further illustrate the pressing need for community awareness and cooperation in maintaining safe roads. Authorities from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have expressed their commitment to tightening regulations in response to recent incidents.
Through collective efforts between law enforcement and the community, there is a hopeful outlook for fostering a culture of responsibility among drivers. These initiatives aim to significantly reduce dangerous driving incidents, ultimately contributing to safer conditions for all road users in Fiji.
