Fiji Police have reported the arrest of 23 motorists for drunk driving during heightened road operations conducted over the Boxing Day period. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety amid the festive season.

According to a police statement, 19 of the arrests occurred along the Suva corridor, where law enforcement officers carried out a total of 171 Random Breath Tests (RBTs). Additionally, four individuals were apprehended in Nadi for the same offence.

Authorities have indicated that these safety operations will persist throughout the festive period, with an increased police presence on major highways and in densely populated urban areas. In light of the significant concern over festive-season accidents, police are urging drivers to plan their travel ahead of time, utilize designated drivers, and refrain from driving after consuming alcohol.

This timely initiative by law enforcement highlights the importance of road safety, especially during a period when festivities lead to increased travel and gatherings. The commitment from the police not only aims to reduce drunk driving incidents but also fosters a culture of responsibility among drivers during the celebration season.
