Fiji police crackdown as raid uncovers massive cannabis haul

A woman has been arrested while authorities search for a man who allegedly threatened officers during a drug raid in Navosa. The incident unfolded yesterday when Western Division Operations officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Vunibota Settlement. It was reported that the male suspect, armed with a knife, threatened the police team before fleeing on horseback.

During the search, police uncovered nearly 2,000 dried plants wrapped in cloth and zip lock bags containing dried leaves and seeds, which are believed to be marijuana. The 48-year-old woman present at the property has been taken into custody as investigations continue. The seized materials have been sent for analysis.

This operation is part of a broader initiative as law enforcement intensifies efforts against illegal drug activities nationwide, with multiple arrests made this week for unlawful possession of marijuana and methamphetamine across various locations, including Labasa Market, Makoi, and Taveuni.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, has indicated that enforcement measures will be heightened in anticipation of the festive season. He encourages the public to report any information related to drug activities through Crimestoppers or the National Police Command Center, emphasizing community cooperation as vital for enhancing public safety.

The ongoing commitment from the Fiji Police Force to address drug-related issues and engage the community offers a hopeful perspective for future efforts. By fostering public awareness and vigilance, authorities aim to create a safer environment for all during the upcoming celebrations.
