Fiji Police Constable Susana Ligaqaqa has been distinguished with the “Excellence in Law Enforcement in the Pacific Region Award” at the Australasian Council of Women and Policing Awards held in Melbourne. This accolade recognizes her outstanding contributions to community policing and her proactive efforts in establishing Crime Prevention Committees, which are pivotal in empowering women and enhancing safety in the community. Operating from Nayavu Community Post, Constable Ligaqaqa’s work has left a significant impact on policing practices in the Pacific region.
Having embarked on her career with the Fiji Police Force as a Special Constable in 2005, Ligaqaqa became a full-time officer by 2020. She dedicated her award to her colleagues, family, and the community, motivating women and young girls to nurture self-belief, carry out their responsibilities with integrity, and maintain faith in God.
This award reflects a broader movement towards gender equality in the police force, aligning with similar achievements by other women in the Fiji Police Force. Among them is PC Sadamma, who has demonstrated the potential of women in policing through her own two decades of service. Her achievements, alongside Ligaqaqa’s, challenge the traditional norms of male-dominated professions, offering encouragement to other women aspiring to such roles.
The recognition of these officers not only honors their personal accomplishments but also serves as an inspiring message to future generations. It demonstrates the evolving landscape towards greater inclusivity, where gender equality is more prevalent, and women are increasingly empowered to break barriers and contribute significantly to societal safety and development.
