The Fiji Police Force has made remarkable strides in its cold case investigations, revealing progress in six out of nineteen active cases, with one high-profile case officially resolved. In a recent press conference, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu shared significant updates from the cold case team, underscoring their dedicated efforts in unraveling long-standing mysteries.
Commissioner Tudravu stated, “Of the 19 files that are being handled by the cold case team, we have made some progress on six files.” One major breakthrough involves the closure of a tragic murder-suicide case of a couple in Nasau that occurred on September 25, 2023, where investigators have confirmed that foul play can be ruled out.
Moreover, two cases have been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further legal advice. These include the 1993 alleged murder of Josefa Tikoitoga in Ra and a heartbreaking incident from 2013 in Nadroga, where a man is alleged to have killed his wife and daughter before fleeing abroad and destroying their home. It has been revealed that the suspect is believed to be overseas.
In addition, there are three more intricate investigations currently under review with the ODPP. These cases involve a murder from 2020 that took place between Mana Island and Malolo and the historic disappearance of a Russian couple in the 1990s. The persistence of the cold case team demonstrates the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to resolving these enduring and complex matters.
This development aligns with the Fiji Police’s broader initiative to improve their cold case resolution capabilities. Commissioner Tudravu has previously pointed out the challenges posed by limited manpower and resources that have affected various investigations.
