Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has pledged his support for officers amid ongoing investigations into allegations involving seven senior police officials, including the head of the Narcotics Bureau, who are allegedly tied to illicit drug operations. Commissioner Tudravu affirmed that no disciplinary actions or suspensions will be enacted without substantial evidence to substantiate the claims.
He stressed the importance of not forming opinions based solely on public sentiment regarding his officers, declaring, “I’ll stand by my men.” Tudravu recognized the gravity of the accusations, particularly due to their association with high-ranking officials, but noted that they are yet to be verified. “At this point in time, it’s still a Viber message. We are doing our best,” he remarked.
The commissioner also addressed the detrimental effects that the circulating allegations are having on the morale of the police force, urging the public to avoid jumping to conclusions. “Anybody can name them – even they can name me,” he warned, highlighting the potential damage such claims can cause, irrespective of their truth.
Tudravu confirmed that all seven officers implicated in the allegations, including the director of Narcotics, are currently under investigation. He indicated that law enforcement, with assistance from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), is meticulously working to trace the origins of the messages to bring clarity to the situation.
As the investigations progress, there is hope that the truth will come to light and that the integrity of the police force will be upheld. The commitment to thoroughness and fairness in addressing these serious allegations can potentially strengthen public trust in the police, demonstrating a dedication to accountability and transparency.
